It seems like every year we blink and it’s the last week of October. If you’re one to wait until the last minute for a costume, especially for your dog, you’ve stumbled upon the right place! We’ve compiled four simple DIY dog costumes so yours won’t be the only dog on the block without a costume this Halloween.
Downright Devil

All dogs can have a devilish side – but that doesn’t mean they don’t still look wickedly adorable.
What You’ll Need:
- Red fabric
- Ribbon
- Needle & thread
- Devil horns
Directions:
- Cut red fabric into a rectangle. Fold in half into a square and cut out a larger, quarter-circle shape along the outside edge and a small quarter-circle along the inside corner (this will be the neck hole).
2. When you unfold the fabric, you should have a perfectly shaped cloak.
3. Sew ribbon to the corners and drape around your dog, tying around his neck.
4. Top with easy, store-bought horns and your little devil dog is complete!
Straight-Up Superhero
Your pup is the real hero, but we’re here to save the day with a DIY costume. More detailed directions can be found at Fiskars. Photo via Lisa Storms.
What You’ll Need:
- Fabric in your choice of color
- Felt in various colors
- Ribbon
- Elastic
- Fabric glue and/or needle and thread
Directions:
- Select a color fabric for the cape, fold in half, and cut into shape, incorporating a circle at one end for the neck hole. (Follow the ‘Downright Devil’ cape directions.)
- Decorate the back of the cape as desired with contrasting felt colors and fabric glue.
- Sew ribbon to the corners and drape around your dog, tying around his neck.
- For the mask, measure the width of your dog’s head and eyes, mark these measurements on a piece of paper, and draw a simple mask shape around them.
- Use your mask stencil to then cut the shape out of felt (twice), layer a strip of elastic between the felt masks, and size to your dog’s head.
All-Time Angel
Holy Cuteness! Your pup is as sweet as can be with a halo to match. More detailed photos can be found at Our Peaceful Planet.
What You’ll Need:
- White craft foam sheet
- White feathers (optional)
- Blue or silver glitter glue (optional)
- Brown felt or fabric
- Gold pipe cleaners
- Hot glue gun
- Velcro
Directions:
- Measure the circumference around your dog’s belly and cut the brown felt/fabric into an appropriate length band. Add Velcro to both sides of the band and ensure it fits snug around your dog’s belly.
- Cut the wings out of a sheet of white craft foam. Then either draw feathers onto the foam and trace with glitter glue or, for extra credit, glue real white feathers on top.
- Hot glue the wings to the belly band fabric.
- Cut a tiny hole and poke a gold pipe cleaner through the belly band. Use more gold pipe cleaners to form the shape of a halo.
Hipster Hound

Your dog is trendy, enjoys a nice puppaccino and believes Halloween is a state of mind. Here’s a DIY costume that reflect your dog’s independence.
What You’ll Need:
- Child-size flannel shirt
- Inexpensive, plastic glasses with lenses removed
- Child-size fedora (optional)
- Clip-on bow tie (optional)
Directions: For this simple costume, all you need are a few items available at any clothing store or thrift store. Pick up a child-sized flannel shirt, child-sized fedora, and a pair of inexpensive, plastic glasses with the lenses removed. Or, if your dog won’t wear a hat, add a cute clip-on bowtie and style your pup’s fur into a fun faux-hawk! Obviously, Halloween is a chance to make your dog look extra cute, plus it’s fun playing dress-up. However, be sure to have your pup practice wearing the costume before the big day and give him extra treats when he cooperates. It’s important to make the costume-wearing a positive experience for your dog and prioritize your dog’s comfort and safety.
